Liesbeek River Project

Jan 2008 - Liesbeek River Project, Cape Town.

This amazing community project is on the river banks adjacent to Upper Noreen Avenue in Claremont downstream from Kirstenbosch (Cape Town).

Dr Joan Parker has been the instigator and is the continuing driving force behind this hidden gem of a valley in surburban Cape Town.
Joan inspired the local residents association and together - via sponsorship, working with the municipality and sheer hard work on her part (and her hired gardener Matthews) they have transformed a steep, overgrown river valley into a beautiful park-like area. The community can now meet, share a drink or a picnic under the trees and enjoy the space.

Joan took us on a tour - down the wheelchair-friendly boardwalk, and through the garden, and showed us that this garden contains mostly indigenous plants - with a few exceptions thrown in for good measure. It is plain to see how much time and effort has been put into this previously overgrown alien-covered wasteland bordering residential houses - now transformed into plenty of shady spots where picnics and social chats can take place.

Joan even tells me that there is a wedding planned there in the coming months!

Thanks to Joan, Matthews and her supporters, sponsors and neighbours for this shining example of what can be achieved when people work together.

Directions:

The project is on the river banks adjacent to Upper Noreen Avenue in Claremont downstream from Kirstenbosch.

From N2... take left hand turn onto M3 to Muizenberg/Kirstenbosch.
Past UCT and Newlands Forest Station, the M3 takes a left hand bend to robots (count these robots as #1).

Go straight over these robots and carry on down the M3 (M3 is now called Paradise Road), through robots #2.

Then you will see a Shell garage on your left, then robots #3 (keep on M3, don't bear left to Claremont/Protea Road).

M3 then becomes Edinburgh Drive and snakes uphill slightly and get into the RIGHT HAND LANE as you are going to turn right at these robots (#4). (no street sign)
If you end up going up a steepish hill to Wynberg/Constantia, you have gone too far!!!

Warning! Be prepared to turn very first right into Robinson Avenue.

Go straight over stop street (Balfour) and at next stop street, turn right into Upper Noreen. Drive along this road and park just past where the fence on your left ends (see map).
