Klein Optenhorst Garden |
|
 |
|
Klein Optenhorst lies in the historic Bovlei valley just outside the town of Wellington.
This farm garden nestled in the Bovlei valley, is well renowned for its salvia collection and has many beautiful features like sun and shady spots,
terraces, a huge vegetable garden and a large dam with gazebo.
The garden was terraced by the current owners in 1987, and planted over the years with a range of interesting and unusual heat-tolerant plants.
Other features include an ancient wild olive, believed to be more than 400 years old, a gravel garden, and various ponds.
The terraces from the stoep of the nineteenth century farmhouse lead down to a large farm dam with fine views of the surrounding farms that lie on the foothills of the Groenberg.
Klein Optenhorst Pinot Noir Cap Classique and plants will be on sale.
Directions:
Once in Wellington, turn into Kerk Street (the main street) and pass through the town towards Bains Kloof. Just after Bovlei Winery turn left, then fork right immediately after. At the T-junction turn right. Klein Optenhorst is higher up on the left, on the untarred section.
(This is the only garden that will be open on Sunday 23 October. Entrance fee is R40,00 for the day which includes tee and home made scones. Tickets for sale at the farm.)

Town garden of Peter and Lizette Siderfin
In this organic garden in the centre of Wellington animals and insects co-exist in perfect harmony.
For many years no chemicals have been used. Nature looks after itself and the insects are part of the food chain for all the birds and wild life in the garden.
There are peacocks, guinea fowls, hadedas, rabbits, tortoises, ducks, chickens and lots of squirrels all roaming the garden.
A koi-dam full of hungry fish are always begging for food.
This low maintenance garden is divided into different rooms and exist mainly of green and gold foliage - a real children's paradise.
This shady garden is child friendly and has large trees, shrubs and a variety of grasses.
